Join us in reimagining the 3rd Police District garden!

Our story

In 1995, John Tropiano and his students at the former Annunciation School planted many of the existing shrubs and trees that are there today.  (In prior years, the garden was neglected, attracting weeds and trash.)  Then, in 2003, 3rd Police District Community Relations Officer Gary Harkins arranged with Home Depot to replant and mulch the 11th Street garden. However, the new plants and trees began to suffer from lack of consistent watering. Neighbors stepped in to donate and install the existing soaker hose system that is now in all beds.

Since then, volunteers had worked with Gary (until his untimely passing in 2013) to plant, weed, and mulch the gardens.

Today, the garden is ready for a new beginning.  Many of the original trees have died, and some plantings are no longer appropriate due to size or age.

We are partnering with Urban Jungle Designs to create a plan and budget to reimagine this foundational garden in the 3rd Police District.  We will be launching fundraising in the near future.  (You can sign up for our newsletter to stay informed.)
